Home overflows with family fun

Mark and Tracy Hooks' riverfront home in RiverNorth community in North Augusta has some of the best seats for watching events on the Savannah River.

"There's always something going on," Ms. Hooks said. "We like having the luxury of being spectators from our own home."

When they're not watching the action on the river, they're likely to be found in their backyard.

"We have lots of picnics outside, especially when it's warm. It's like our own little retreat," she said.

They moved into the 3,700-square-foot house in 2000 after spending a year designing it and having it built.

"We wanted a house to live in, so we carefully planned which rooms we would have and which ones we didn't really need, like a formal dining room," Mr. Hooks said. "We wanted each part of our house to be used and not a showcase. For us, it's worked out pretty well. It makes our home cozy and welcoming."

Their home is also kid-friendly, Mrs. Hooks said. With 3-year-old twins Flip and Ansley, and 2-year-old Zach, it was important to consider children's dÃcor, she said.

Throughout the first floor and the basement, vibrant colors from the children's toys complement the Earth tones the couple chose for most of the dÃcor.

In the children's room, hand-painted murals of a cow, a horse and the family's dog fill the walls. The alphabet borders the walls near the ceiling. The children's bathroom features the Three Little Pigs.

"We wanted to do something educational and fun for their room," Mrs. Hooks said. "The animals and the colors accomplish both. I must say, it's my favorite room."

Though the Hooks had a major hand in designing their house, they also had -- and still have -- the support of family and friends in making it a home, Mrs. Hooks said.

"Our home is a project in progress, and we've tackled the project along with family and friends," she said. "It's a labor of love."
