Residence is filled with quilts, family treasures

The signature line on Mary Ann Harpe's e-mail reads "When your life is in pieces, make a quilt."

Over the years, in good times and bad, Mrs. Harpe has made many quilts which adorn her Evans home. She has always enjoyed sewing and made her own clothes as a teenager.

"When the two poles in my closet broke, my father suggested doing something else," she said.

She dabbled in quilting and cross-stitch, but her interest in quilting finally took root when her children were born. Her handiwork is seen throughout their home, covering beds and hanging on walls. Each one comes with its own story.

Son Preston Harpe has several quilts in his room, including a charm quilt with 2,100 prints of extinct animals. The border reads "Will they miss us when we are gone?"

Mrs. Harpe's first major quilt, made in 1992, is now the bed covering in daughter Anna's room. Mrs. Harpe had a pansy print she wanted to work the quilt around and went to a crafting event and purchased only purple and yellow fabrics.

She incorporated the colors, but the pansy print never made it into the quilt.

The Harpes have lived in their Evans home since Mr. Harpe retired from the Navy seven years ago. A Columbia County native, he wanted to return to his roots and raise his family there, Mrs. Harpe said.
