Going the distance

Nearly 400 years ago, an imaginative golfer filled a horsehide sphere with goose feathers and let it dry into a hard, tight and light sphere. In that moment, golf's first gadget guy was born.

In the centuries since, there has been an endless array of products, inventions and ideas developed with the simple goal of making a ball go straight and far. Some caught on -- nobody actually plays with wooden woods anymore -- while others fizzled. Below are some of this year's models, products designed, often by small startup entrepreneurs, with better golf in mind.
