Money for Paine College

Dave Olson, the Savannah River Remediation president and project manager, presented a $5,000 check recently to Dr. George C. Bradley, the president of Paine College. The donation will be used to help fund scholarships for Paine students.

Invited to bowl game

Lance Arbogast, of Hephzibah, was named an Offense-Defense All-American and invited to participate in the 7th Annual Offense-Defense Bowl Week Festivities in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Offense-Defense Youth All-American Bowl is a part of a weeklong series of events leading up to an all-star game showcasing 88 of the top high school seniors in the country.

Grant for Hope House

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded a $1,221 Youth Literacy grant to Hope House Inc. The foundation awards grants to assist in creating or expanding youth literacy programs, to purchase new literacy technology or equipment, or to purchase books, materials or software for youth literacy programs. Hope House helps women recover from addiction.

Essay contest winner

Kayla Dawn Price was selected as a winner in the annual Arthur Ashe Essay Contest sponsored by the U.S. Tennis Association. Price, a sophomore at the Academy of Richmond County, received a trip for two to the Winston-Salem Open, the final event of the Emirates Airlines U.S. Open Series. The essay topic was “If Arthur Ashe were alive today, what would give him hope?” Price’s response suggested he would find hope in the Junior Tennis League and its positive impact, beyond tennis, on the lives of students who have participated in the program.
