One of Augusta’s best-loved artists, Leonard “Porkchop” Zimmerman, will be unveiling his mural at the Augusta-Richmond County Public Library on Friday, Jan. 17. The mural, titled Playin’ With My Friends, is in the Children’s Department. Porkchop’s colorful, energetic aesthetic is a perfect fit for this setting, and I’m sure kids and adults alike will enjoy this mural for many years to come. It’s great to see local government agencies support hometown artists, isn’t it? Come to the Augusta Library at 10 a.m. to see the mural unveiled and enjoy light refreshments of juice and cookies.
What are your favorite winter time socks? This polar vortex weather sure had me wanting to buy every pair I saw, and even with our mild winters it’s a good idea to have a few pair that guarantee your feet to stay dry and toasty even in the lowest of temperatures. Smartwool is a brand that will never disappoint, with a patented yarn blend that includes merino wool, nylon and elastic. It’s thick enough to keep you warm, but not so thick your feet won’t fit inside your boots. Find them online for around $17, in a variety of styles and colors.
Another great brand is Topman – keeping you warm but also featuring a dazzling array of colors, patterns and textures. Find them online at www.us.topman.com.
Christmas is the season for giving, and New Year’s always triggers a spike in under-the-wire giving for tax purposes. However, I have a few apps that will help you keep up that streak by integrating giving into your daily routine.
I Can Go Without … is an app that prompts you to forego first-world luxuries such as lattes and give that money to a worthy cause, such as clean water for schools.
