Shopgirl: Music in the Park concert

Can you believe it’s almost time for the kids to be back in school? All this rain has really put a damper (pun intended) on the great summer events around town, but don’t let it keep you from the last Music in the Park concert on Thursday, July 25.

It’s the last of the 2013 summer series sponsored by the North Augusta Cultural Arts Council and will feature the 246th Army Jazz Band – and it’s free! It will be held at the Wesley Center on Georgia Avenue and will spotlight local artists in an art show that will be open before and after the musical program. Music kicks off at 7 p.m., and you can find more information at

I can’t wait until the whole RayBan Wayfarers ripoffs trend is gone, gone, gone. I get that it’s a universally flattering shape, but enough already! They’ve turned into a classic case of what I call “everyone wearing because everyone’s wearing,” and unoriginality is the bane of my existence.

I have a great alternative for you people looking for a classic silhouette (and I’m in no way original in saying this) – the RayBan Clubmaster frames. I predict it will be the next frame to make a resurgence and deluge our faces and sunglasses racks.

I’ve tracked down a few places that sell lookalike frames for less than RayBan’s $145. Madewell has a great pair at $49.50, and ASOS sells a pair for only $20. I love Clubmasters because they’re a little more formal and tailored than aviators, and come in both warm and cool palettes.

I found the funniest app the other day. Just by asking a few key questions, it creates a haiku based on what you’re currently experiencing. The first question is something like “What is happening around you?” and you have five words for your answer. The second is “How do you feel?” and your answer can be a bit longer. The last sentence, “Describe life in 3 words” or “Killer sentence” is supposed to wrap up your haiku with a punch.

I love this app because it serves the purpose of social media (recording what’s going on around you) with a little more brainpower required. You can share your creations via your other social media accounts or just on Heyku.

Check it out at or download the iPhone app on the App Store.
