Happy Independence Day! I am so looking forward to this month.
My dear husband is coming home in mid-July for two weeks’ leave from Afghanistan, and we look forward to spending some time together as a family and are planning a vacation to Disney and Universal Studios. Until then, my kids are still enjoying swimming lessons, park visits, summer birthday parties and an occasional pajamas-and-family-movie day when it rains.
Look for some great meat deals this week before the Fourth! Hot dogs, hamburgers, ground beef, ribs and steaks are featured this month. If you see any of these meats at 30percent to 50 percent off, it would be a good idea to put a few packs in the freezer for later if you have the space. I purchase large packages of sale meats and freeze smaller portions for later to give me flexibility for meal planning.
As the weather gets hotter, we like to move cooking outside to our grill at least once a week. We like to cook several meats at one time so we will have a supply in the freezer that can be thawed for quick meals during our busy week.
Keep your eye out for all the Fourth of July items, such as plates, cookies and even cake mixes. These should go on clearance sometime next week. I love to find uses for these clearance items other times of the year. Star shapes can be used at Christmas, winter events or even for birthday party themes. Think all-star sports or space themes for boys and Hollywood/Superstar or an Evening Star (Princess and the Frog) theme for a girl. Solid-color paper plates, napkins or utensils can be used at other events.
After the Fourth of July, stores will start to set up their back-to-school aisles. Be on the lookout for clearance items, especially at the end of the month. As they make room for their back-to-school items, the summer products and older school and office merchandise should start getting marked down.
To prepare yourself for back-to-school sales, start taking stock of your child’s wardrobe and school-supply needs now so you will be ready when the sales begin. School begins on Aug. 6 in Columbia County, Aug. 7 in Burke County, Aug. 12 in Richmond County and Aug. 19 in North Augusta.
To find out what your child needs for the school year, check out the school Web page. Your child’s supply list will help you decide what you need. Just be aware that some schools are requesting that you bring your child’s supplies during their open house events, especially for kindergarten.
According to All You Magazine, July is the best month to buy furniture or get a gym membership.
New furniture lines are introduced this month, so retailers discount old merchandise to make room for the new arrivals.
Gym memberships drop in the summer as people give up on their New Year’s resolutions. You can score a good deal if you ask around.
There are a few national promotions during July. It is National Baked Bean Month, National Hot Dog Month, National Blueberry Month and National Ice Cream Month. Ice cream coupons have already started coming in our coupon inserts, and combining those with sales should provide some yummy and cheap treats to help beat the heat this month.
Vegetables in season this month include summer squash, garlic, okra, onions, potatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, cucumber, corn and green beans. Fruits include tomatoes, watermelon, pears (Asian and Bartlett), blackberries, blueberries, figs, grapes, plums, peaches, nectarines and some varieties of oranges.
