Shopgirl: iPad 3, Chick-Fil-A and Fashion Week

iPad 3, Chick-Fil-A for military and Fashion Week trends
A tailored, 1950s inspired style, such as this look from the Mila Schoen collection shown during the fashion week in Milan, Italy, is trendy.

Rumor has it Apple will be unveiling the iPad 3 on Wednesday at a “special event” in San Francisco.

The invitation, sent to a select list of journalists, had a picture of what seems to be an iPad and the words “We have something you really have to see. And touch.” Of course, everyone has their own idea of what the newest iPad might offer, but there are a few things everyone agrees the 3 will probably have.

The iPad 3 is likely to feature a heftier battery – longer life accompanied by a heavier weight and larger size. Most people are also saying the iPad 3 will have the high-pixel-count retina display like the iPhone 4S. Siri, the voice-recognition virtual assistant launched on the 4S, is also being mentioned as a possible feature.

The iPad has largely dominated the tablet market, as sales of other devices (including the BlackBerry Playbook, the Samsung Galaxy Tab and Motorola Xoom) have disappointed. By comparison, Apple sold a record 15.4 million iPads in its latest quarter, more than double the amount sold over the same quarter in 2011. Those strong tablet sales helped push Apple to record quarterly revenue of $46.3 billion and record profit of $13.1 billion.

Fashion weeks in New York, London and Milan have come and gone, so now we mortals have to interpret the wild runway looks for our everyday lives.

Themes that are sure to be seen for a while include florals, sheer fabrics, pastel shades and overall feminine and romantic overtones. In Milan, designers projected a more tailored, 1950s look interspersed with heavy doses of florals and colorblocking.

With the rise of man-on-the-street blogs like The Sartorialist, what fashion kingmakers wear to runway shows inspire trends as much as the designers’ lines themselves. Animal prints are becoming more popular, and neons are being used to spice up otherwise dull looks.

As with every fashion concept, use trends as punctuation. If you’re a leather jacket and jeans girl, it won’t make sense (and you’ll feel like you’re in costume) to show up in a floral dress just because it’s a trend. Instead, wear a sheer scarf or tiny floral earrings to add interest.

The Chick-Fil-A on Robert C. Daniel Parkway in Augusta is holding a Military Appreciation Day on Tuesday, giving away food to active duty military.

“It is very fulfilling to help the men and women who put their lives on the line for our county,” said franchise operator Kenny Hanna. “We hope they will come enjoy this small token of our appreciation for all that they do.”

All active duty military personnel with current identification will receive an entree of choice, side item and drink if they visit the restaurant from 5 to 8 p.m. A percentage of sales from friends, family and supporters of the military will go to the Augusta Warrior Project.

There is no purchase necessary; this offer is only for dine-in guests.
