The Pinch: Store closings mean discounts

The Food Lion by the Home Depot at Belair and Washington roads is one of three stores in Columbia County slated to close. The stores are having sales.

This tax season, Walmart is offering a $3 flat fee for check cashing and free federal 1040 EZ filing in more than 3,000 stores, according to a release.

Walmart is providing the low-cost check-cashing service because millions of Americans don’t have access to traditional banking services, including checking accounts. Some providers charge between 1 and 3 percent of the total refund to cash the check.

Walmart is working with Jackson Hewitt and H&R Block to double its in-store tax kiosks and lower the cost for tax-preparation services. Jackson Hewitt will offer free federal Form 1040EZ filing at Walmart kiosks throughout the tax season. H&R Block will offer free federal Form 1040EZ filing until Feb. 29.

Three Columbia County Food Lion stores are having store-closing sales, said Christy Phillips-Brown, Food Lion corporate spokeswoman.

The discounts will be determined by each store. Sales will exclude alcohol and tobacco products, Phillips-Brown said.

The grocery stores are at 526 N. Belair Road, 3851 Evans to Locks Road and 4087 Old Petersburg Road. They are among 113 underperforming stores that parent company Delhaize America will close within 30 days.

Nine West at Augusta Mall is closing, and shoppers can find some deals on shoes and other merchandise.

All items are 40 percent off, according to a store associate. This 40 percent discount is in addition to promotions on select items, which range from 30 to 70 percent off.

The store will close Thursday, Jan. 26. All sales are final with no exchanges or returns. Nine West is also offering coupons that can be used online or at other locations. The retailer is still honoring rewards passes.

Through Sunday, Banana Republic will offer military personnel (active members, veterans and home-based) and their families 50 percent off three regular-priced items. Starting Monday, military and their families will receive 15 percent off regular-priced items.

Customers must present a valid military service or veteran’s ID, including a spouse or dependent card, at purchase.
