Robert and Shannon Rollings liked their deck.
Taller than many of the nearby treetops, the back deck of the Rollings' home in The Rapids in North Augusta overlooks the Savannah River.
When a tree crashed through it two years ago, they seized the opportunity to create an outdoor living space they could love.
Now, they have a wall jutting from one side of the house that creates privacy and provides a backdrop for a stacked stone fireplace, which matches a nearly identical one in the home's great room. The couple spends a lot of time relaxing in their new outdoor living room overlooking the river.
"We bought the house for the view," Shannon said. "It was kind of like a retreat when we bought it."
The deck is one of many upgrades to their home.
In the kitchen, they installed stained glass to create privacy without blocking the light.
"When we moved in, everything, including the trim, was painted (sea foam) green," Shannon said.
She repainted in a sandy beige that she said reminds her of Tuscany.
The layout of the home capitalizes on the view. Large windows open the interior to the outdoors.
Glass shower walls and a picture window in the master bathroom off the master bedroom on the first floor offer an unobstructed view from the shower.
"So it's very relaxing to get ready in the morning," Shannon said.
When the couple is not relaxing by watching the river, they spend time riding bicycles on the Greeneway, which runs through the neighborhood.
Summers find them kayaking on the river behind their home or hiking down to the riverbank.
"In the summer, you can't see back up," Robert said.
Their home is their retreat, but they love the convenience to North Augusta and Augusta. Shannon, who owns Shannon Rollings Real Estate, has an office in Jackson Square, which Robert owns. She likes that she is only minutes from the office.
"You can spend a lot of time in Augusta and North Augusta and not see a lot of the river," Shannon said.
