Shopgirl: Uber ride hailing services now offers desktop version

WHAT’S NEW: Uber is now available on Windows desktops, thanks to a recent update for Windows 10 software. You can now order an Uber from your desk, without having to constantly look down at your phone. This is great for people who like to minimize their cellphone use in the office, which I think is a professional touch. You still have to sign up for an Uber account using a smartphone, but after you do that Uber is accessible from your Windows desktop via Universal Windows Apps.

WHAT’S TRENDY: Sometimes for people who are impossible to buy for, like cool younger sisters or elegant aunts, it’s tempting to resort to beauty and cosmetics. That’s not a bad idea, especially if you know that your recipient likes to experiment, but there are a few guidelines you might want to keep in mind. Steer clear of fragrances, or any products with strong fragrances. It’s almost impossible to predict what someone else enjoys when it comes to scent. Indulgent face masks, like FRESH’s rose-algae mask, say “treat yourself” without adding on “you need this.” Don’t give anything that implies blemish, like blackhead-clearing potions or anti-frizz oil. Another way to go is to find a basic “secret ingredient” that makeup artists swear by, like RMS Beauty’s Living Luminizer. This tiny canister is the secret to the dewy complexions you saw in most high fashion last year, a tiny hint of a glow but not quite a glitter.

WHAT’S AFFORDABLE: Sky City’s Festivus of Bands is one of my absolute favorite holiday traditions. More local bands than you can imagine, free admission and everyone home for the holidays makes it an event perfect for getting friends together and enjoying the best things of downtown Augusta’s nightlife. The lineup includes The Dirty Realists, Deathstar, Chris Hardy and a multitude of other names and groups, more than 20 total. This runs from Dec. 17 through Dec. 19, and doors open at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday. Saturday opens up with a vinyl record swap, and music starts at 6 p.m. You can find more info at Sky City’s Facebook page or at skycityaugusta.com.
