Today's Home: Wando Woodlands

Marian “Scooter” Dukes and her husband, Bronson “Buddy,” wanted an open floor plan and a quiet neighborhood, and they found both two years ago in North Augusta’s Wando Woodlands.

The subdivision off Bergen Road is still growing, and the couple’s home is on one of the older side streets. She said she knows it’s just a matter of time until the construction will affect the woods that offer privacy for the backyard. For now, she really enjoys the natural setting.

She decorated the home herself, including painting the walls and choosing much of the furniture.

“It’s just got some little personal touches all the way through,” she said.

In the living room, she applied a crackle finish to the wall surrounding the fireplace, which gives it the appearance of stucco.

In the master bedroom, she painted silver zebra stripes above the headboard. She repurposed a broken mirror to frame burlap, on which she painted dandelions, and hung it on the same wall.

The back patio was a blank white slab when they moved in, so she painted it to resemble stone. Then she pitched a canopy over it to create a relaxing outdoor space.

She said her husband teases her about being able to tell when she’s been on Pinterest, because many of the projects have come from the site.

“He likes it,” she said. “He says, ‘You do make a house a home.’ ”
