Today's Home: Summer Hill

Laney and Andrew Mize consider their Summer Hill home to be their little bubble.

Built in the 1980s in a quiet cul-de-sac and recently updated, the three-bedroom, two-story home is more modern than many Summerville homes that surround it.

The large, covered deck on the side of the home adds to the illusion of isolation, as a treeline nearly hides the neighbors and gives a feeling of being in the woods.

The deck is one thing that sold the Mizes on the home. Large enough for a couple of conversation areas and a hot tub, the area is perfect for outdoor entertaining.

Though the home can seem secluded, Laney said the neighborhood is a close-knit community, and they have already met all of their new neighbors.

Another thing that sold the couple on the home was that no work needed to be done to it.

Previous owners renovated the home in 2004, updating the bathrooms and the kitchen and installing hardwood floors.

“Andrew called it ‘couch ready,’” Laney said.

She did much of the decorating herself, with her mother’s help, but Andrew wanted more say-so in the living room. His love of Augusta history is reflected in the artwork depicting landmarks such as the Bon Air Hotel and the Sibley Mill.

His love of golf – his uncle is Masters Tournament champion Larry Mize – is also reflected in the home’s decor.

The small lot surrounding the home was already landscaped with lush gardens, which appealed to the gardener in Laney. She said while many of the larger plants were already there, she has been working to add her own touches with some smaller plants.

A second master bedroom on the second floor offers plenty of room for guests, and a smaller, third bedroom upstairs will eventually become a nursery.
