Today's Home: West Lake

Nine years ago, Dr. Bradley Bertram intended to build a home in West Lake. He purchased property and hired a draftsman, but after touring the neighborhood again, he decided to renovate an existing home that had many features he liked.

“I liked the big yard, the privacy and location,” he said. “And the schools were important.”

As it turned out, the drafter he had hired had drawn the plans for the house he purchased. Despite liking many aspects of the home, Bertram completely updated it. Almost every room was painted pink, and not the same shade of pink. All the rooms were repainted in neutral hues except for his daughter’s bedroom, which is pink.

The outside of the home also received a face lift. A gabled façade was added to the back. “I wanted the back of the house to look like the front,” he said.

The landscaped backyard is a popular gathering spot. Bertram and his wife, Paige, were married there in May 2007, and he has his morning coffee on the back porch.

“It’s really quiet here,” he said.
