Today's Home: Ridge Road at Lake Thurmond

The sloped, 1-acre lot that creates an interesting and beautiful landscape for Angie and Bruce Howland’s Lake Thurmond home presented construction challenges. The couple chose to build their 5,000-square-foot home five years ago without a builder, because there were no clear paths and very little room for maneuvering materials around the site.

An arched, Argentinean cedar front door welcomes guests inside, where the Mediterranean theme is complimented by a Tuscan and Andalusian interior décor. Stone backsplashes in the kitchen, along with a warm yellow paint scheme, adds to the old-world Tuscan feel.

The home is designed to provide seamless transition from the indoors to the outdoors, where the Howlands prefer to spend most of their time. “I would much rather be outdoors than in,” Angie said.

An outdoor shower lets guests wash off lake water, and a wooden bridge and gravel path in the back ard makes getting from the house to the lake easy by golf car. “We have a lot of friends over just about every weekend,” Angie said. “Summers are a lot of fun here.”
