Last week’s photo showed the upcoming 2014 Jaguar F-Type, a sleek descendant of the E-Type introduced in the early 1960s. For a better photo and information, read this week’s road test.
Chosen randomly from the correct entries was the name of Larry Anderson, of Perry, Fla., who told us:
“I’d better get this one right! I have had quite a few Jags over the years and loved every one of them.
“It’s a Jaguar F-Type roadster, a beautiful car in the old XKE tradition (and that car was arguably one of the most sexy and beautiful autos ever made). I just wish I had one.”
Almost everyone who entered the contest correctly guessed the F-Type. That’s pretty good for a car that is new to the automotive scene.

CANTON, GA.: David Anderson wrote: “The Jaguar F-Type can be thought of as the smaller, cozier, slightly tamer version of the XK convertible. With a wheelbase only 5 inches shorter than the XK, Jaguar has translated that into an overall length that is just over a foot shorter than the XK.
“This is accomplished by removing the back seat (it was only useful for small children or storage anyway) and reducing the trunk capacity from 11 cubic feet to 7 cubic feet. Dimensionally, the interior of the F-Type is otherwise nearly spot-on with the front-seat dimensions of the XK.
“This smaller size yields about a 200-pound advantage for the V-6 versions and around 100 pounds for the V-8 version.
“The base F-Type and the F-Type S are equipped with a 3-liter V-6 producing 340 and 380 horsepower, respectively. The F-Type V-8 S is equipped with the same 5-liter V-8 as is found in the XK and is detuned from the 510 horsepower rating of the XKR to a mere 495 horsepower. All engines achieve this horsepower rating through supercharging.
“Though all XKs come equipped with a now industry standard six-speed automatic, the F-Type is fitted with a newer eight-speed ‘Quick Shift’ automatic. All F-Types also come equipped with Intelligent Start/Stop for improved gas mileage in stop-and-go driving. This raises the best combined average rating for the F-Type to 23 mpg versus 20 mpg for the XK.
“Now for the good news. The base F-Type can be had for a whopping $16,000 less than the base XK convertible! Similar savings are available comparing the F-Type S and F-Type V-8 S models to their XK equivalents. For all of these savings, you sacrifice a few horsepower rating points and it will take you maybe two-tenths of a second longer to reach 60 mph, but you saved 16 grand!
“Comparatively speaking, as long as I am daydreaming that I could ever afford any of these cars anyway, I’ll take that kind of savings all day long!”

“Several years ago, I drove an XK on the Autobahn in Germany at 130 mph, and there was still more throttle left.
“Car and Driver magazine lists the V-8 F-Type’s top speed as 186 mph. Wow! I think red is the right color for this car.”
