Living History Park puts focus on art for weekend

An upcoming event at North Augusta’s Living History Park is a departure from its standard offerings.

“This is a juried art show,” said Lynn Thompson, the president of the Olde Towne Preservation Association, which will present the ninth annual Olde Towne Artisans Fair from Friday through Sunday, April 20-22.

As the name implies, Living History Park is home to several historical interpretations throughout the year.

They come complete with re-enactors who bring the Colonial era to life. While the Artisans Fair does feature some interpreters, the focus is on art.

“A lot of people love the history park but are not lovers of history,” she said. “We wanted to tweak the interest of people who are not lovers of history.”

There are 22 artisans who are part of the juried show.

Thompson describes them as “high-end” craftsmen who create in various media such as jewelry, pottery, oil, pen and ink, photography and wood sculpture. New this year is a stained glass artist.

There will be a wine and cheese preview gala from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.

Those attending will have the opportunity to meet the artists as well as start the bidding on the silent auction.

Each artist has donated a piece for the auction.

Events will continue from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday.

In addition to the juried art show, there will be historical interpreters, including a blacksmith, a toymaker and a woodcarver.

Also, there will be entertainment from Nathaniel Samsel, a mountain dulcimer player who finished third in the 2011 dulcimer national competition. He will play from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. Saturday. Other performers include the Savannah River Stringband, the Henrys and The New Tones.

Admission to the event, including the preview party, is free.

There will be concessions available also.

Thompson said the Spring House Tavern will be open on the site. It serves smoked meats such as pork and turkey, and homemade pies and desserts.
