Letter: Once burned, twice shy

You had an excellent letter regarding the inadvisability of locating an arena at the Regency Mall location. I agree with and applaud the writer.

And there have been good editorials on the same subject.

Now I see in today’s paper that certain mental midgets still want to do it.

I moved to Augusta not too long after both malls opened. The paper paid my NJROTC students to do a traffic count and tag check to identify where shoppers were coming from.

Later, my son (now deceased) worked for Sizemore Security at Regency, and then – after the eight-screen theater was built — he became manager of that and the theater inside the mall.

He recounted many horror stories of the damage to automobiles and property and theft, especially in the mall. I know my insurance rates were raised because of frequent damage to my car, which he drove. He had to get police to accompany him to make cash drops – or other employees would go along, though not being paid to do so.

It got worse and worse till we finally got him to quit and go to graduate school, which he was happy to do.

Stores were already leaving by that time. More damage was done to property and, not too long after, the last store closed.

My question is: Has the population in the area changed? Do the same types still roam the area? Would an arena encourage families to locate nearby? I think not.

Once burned, twice shy, and the citizens of the county would be stuck with it and the millions of dollars in debt that would run for 30 years.

It is my intention to warn anyone I know who is moving to Georgia to locate anywhere but Richmond County – unless the mall-site supporters sober up and start thinking about the other residents.

Mayor Davis, it would seem, is getting a good chunk of change under the table. The others seem to love the stench the location plan creates.
