Smarter driving can save on gas use

I see people complain every day about how much gas costs and how much more they spend to go to work, etc. Yet, I don't see anyone changing their driving habits to get better mileage, and in turn use less gas an save themselves some money. I know you have to go to work, but you don't have to drive 10-20 mph over the speed limit to get there.

According to stats from the website, for every 5 mph you drive over the speed limit it averages out like you are paying 24 cents more per gallon for gas.

Look at Bobby Jones Expressway. If you get on there and set your cruise control at the posted speed limit, you will get passed by almost everybody -- with some cussing and gestures added.

Sure we cannot control gas prices, but we can control how much we use. I have a full-size Dodge Quad Cab with a hemi engine that gets more than 20 mpg because of proper maintenance and diving conservatively. That does not mean driving slow -- that means driving the posted speed limits, proper tire inflation, tune-ups and vehicle maintenance.

If you are spending too much on gas every week, it is because you choose to, not because you have to. Again, we cannot control prices, but we can control use.
