Longtime barber truly was a cut above

Russell Maio passed away July 30. He was my barber.

I first met Russell about 17 years ago. Over those 17 years we had probably spent no more than about 75 hours together, 15 minutes at a time -- yet I considered him a friend. It amazed me how well you could get to know a person in such small increments of time.

Russell was a barber, an amateur therapist, and an ardent supporter of all of his customers. It was clear Russell loved his family; he loved fishing; and he truly loved his customers. He had an amazing way of interacting with people both young and old.

He helped guide me during low points in my life, and always reminded me that family was most important. He freely gave good advice on how to raise strong daughters. He was certainly proud of his own daughters and sons.

Russell Maio lived the American dream, and told people about it. Russell implored everyone to take action -- to do something, and to do it well. Russell was an extraordinary man, and I will miss him deeply.
