Educate yourselves about vaccines

Every new school year I am always on edge. The media advertise a plethora of information on vaccines -- which ones a child or young adult needs before he or she can go to school, and the locations where one can be vaccinated. Missing from the news is the fact that anyone can receive an exemption from vaccines -- a medical or religious one -- at any age.

In addition, parents need to educate themselves on the possible dangers of vaccines. A minority of the population will suffer adverse reactions to some vaccines. If one Googles "vaccine" on the Internet, there are dozens of sites to gather facts, including the National Vaccine Information Center outside Washington, D.C.

Children need parental consent for these shots, and parents have a responsibility to make sure that what is injected into their children's bodies is safe.
