In the Your Faith section July 3, I read about the famous Oberammergau Passion Play in Germany, directed by Christian Stueckl, who stated that "Jesus understands himself completely as a Jew. He was never baptized, he never had a First Communion ... ."
Say what? And this man is directing the Passion Play?
A quick read of the Gospels reveals that Jesus was baptized ("evaptisthi") and that He desired to eat ("fagein") with His disciples at the Last Supper. The church celebrates His baptism during the Epiphany, and His partaking of communion during every liturgy.
It is difficult to imagine anyone involved in any activity portraying the life of Christ not having this most basic knowledge of Christian beliefs. Either he was pandering to the secular press and thus was essentially denying Christ, like Peter, out of fear of some sort of worldly retribution for affirming his beliefs or he sincerely holds the liberal-Christian view that Jesus was simply a holy Jewish man, nothing more, nothing less, and certainly nothing divine.
Or perhaps he simply jumped right to the crucifixion, and didn't read the earlier chapters of the Gospels while preparing to direct the play. Ouch!
