All the news about the new library in Augusta has brought back fond memories of my experiences with the library.
As a young girl growing up in the country, the most welcomed event each month of summer vacation was the much-anticipated arrival of the bookmobile. It had a certain smell and feel all its own. Each month I would leave that rolling world of adventure with as many books as my arms could carry! Reading was my salvation during those summers.
When my own children were young, I took them to the library on Greene Street. My daughter, already an avid reader, did not need any help choosing her books. A wonderful librarian named Dorcas was instrumental in helping my son begin his love affair with books. We are all avid readers to this day.
I hope no child, in the city or the country, has to be without friends such as books give us.
