Both houses of Congress have now passed the roughly $780 billion boondoggle affectionately referred to as a stimulus. The bill was passed just in time for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to catch a private jet to Europe for a taxpayer funded meet-and-greet, but had to wait until Tuesday for President Obama to sign it into law. It's a good thing the country survived until Tuesday, since according to them we didn't have a "moment to spare" to avoid catastrophe.
If you look at what's in the bill, it doesn't take long to realize that it is little more than a 40-year wish list of liberal spending programs, with a token amount of tax credits thrown in with the hope of gaining bipartisan support. Sadly for the Obama administration, three votes from the opposite side of the aisle will not give them the cover they seek when this bill fails to deliver on its promise.
This bill does nothing more than create the beast that will eventually eat itself. It's called socialism, and it has failed every time it has been tried. In short, it works like this: As the government grows and exercises ever-increasing control over our lives, productivity lags until it becomes virtually nonexistent. The incentive to produce will vanish as more of our earnings are seized to fund an ever-expanding government. Eventually, most people give up and begin living on government handouts because there is no longer an incentive to do otherwise.
At some point in the future, the government, in its lust for power and control, will have destroyed the very source of this country's wealth, prosperity and, ironically, its own funding in the process.
That's the change we used to fight against, not believe in.
