Pakistan policy is flawed

Dec. 27 was a very tragic day for the future of Pakistan. The terrible assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto probably will mark the end of Pakistan's chance for a democratic, fair government for quite some time.

I cannot help but compare the situation in Pakistan to that in Iraq. If U.S. taxpayers are spending billions of dollars in Iraq to safeguard Iraq's inept, dysfunctional government, then why didn't the Bush administration give the same protection for potential democracy in Pakistan? Think about it.

I, as an American, would like to use this letter to say to all of our U.S. government officials: Stop, I repeat, stop backing and giving billions of U.S. dollars to hard-line officials such as Pakistan's president, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, and the dysfunctional officials in Iraq!

Perhaps the United States should start backing and supporting the right leaders rather than the politically expedient leaders.
