Local blood centers are seeking CMV negative residents to donate platelets to help save seriously ill babies and toddlers.

Cytomegalovirus is a blood virus present in 80 percent of the population that does not pose a risk for adults but can be life-threatening to babies or young children. CMV negative donors are the only ones who can help save critically ill babies or small children.

Shepeard Community Blood Center is also seeking commitments from donors who are not only CMV negative but also A-negative or B-negative to donate platelets.

Donors must be 17 years old – or 16 with parental consent – and weigh at least 110 pounds. Donors are asked to take a photo ID or Shepeard Community Blood donor card and to eat and drink before donating.

Questions on CMV negative donations can be directed to Alicia Reed at (706) 854-1582 or (706) 833-4536.
