Funeral set for Martinez man slain outside church

Services have been announced for a Martinez man fatally shot Thursday night during a carjacking in front of a local church where he and his wife had gone to turn on the sprinkler system.

The funeral for William R. "Bill" DaVitte, 55, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Thomas Poteet & Son chapel with the Rev. Robert Smith and the Rev. Elizabeth Ackerman officiating. Burial  will follow in Abilene Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 214 Davis Rd.

DaVitte was killed when he rushed to defend his wife who was being attacked by a man stealing their SUV.

Daniel Nelson Robinson, 21, of Jacksonville, Fla., was arrested several hours later in his hometown following a police pursuit.

On Saturday, Robinson appeared in court for a hearing on charges in Florida, which include driving without a license, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement officers, trespassing, motor vehicle theft and reckless driving. His bond was set at $200,018, according to Jacksonville jail records. His next court date is Sept. 8.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office still has an active hold on Robinson, but has not yet started the extradition process. As of Sunday, deputies have only obtained a warrant for a murder charge, Morris said, and several other charges are pending.
