School bus cameras can be used for ticketing in South Carolina

  • Follow Metro

IRMO, S.C. — A new law means drivers who illegally pass a stopped school bus in South Carolina are more likely to get hit in the wallet.

The law allows law enforcement to write traffic tickets after reviewing video captured by cameras installed on school buses. Previously, an officer had to personally witness the illegal passing to prosecute – unless injuries resulted and boosted the charge to a felony.

Sen. Thomas Alexander says the lack of consequences contributed to a growing problem he feared would result in tragedy. The Walhalla Republican says he hopes the new law encourages compliance.

Districts around the state are installing exterior camera systems on a pilot basis. They consist of several cameras that videotape different angles of a passing vehicle, to identify the license plate and the driver.

YES!!!

YES!!! Many drivers feel safe passing a stopped school bus because they know the witnesses are not fast enough to get a tag number or an adequate vehicle description.

It's a shame a law like this had to be written. I've seen people pass stopped school buses and always wondered what their big hurry was. Ticket them and make it a huge fine.

The human memory is flawed, the memory of a digital camera is not. Busses should not stop to let children on or off when they have to cross multiple traffic lanes.

GiantsAllDay, and AFjoe,

GiantsAllDay, and AFjoe, sure, it's better to have innocent children killed because some idiot doesn't want to stop for a school bus with flashing lights, right?
