MARION, S.C. — Authorities say a man has been electrocuted while trying to steal copper from the roof of a building in Marion.

Marion County Coroner Jerry Richardson said the man died at a burn center a day after he was shocked. Richardson is still trying to identify the victim.

Investigators said the man was on a ladder around 1:30 a.m. Monday when it fell against a transformer, causing an explosion and shocking the man so badly his clothes caught fire.

Nearby residents called 911 to report the explosion and the burning man. Firefighters could not immediately help the man until utility officials could confirm power had been turned off.

Police are investigating and think at least two other people might have been helping the man and abandoned him after he was electrocuted.

Not Shed A Tear

Wish there were a few more. Then this might actually deter others from choosing this line of work. The extreme cost to repair, versus the paltry payment from the scrap, makes this a really stupid way to make some money. Everyone hurts and pays.

The only thing better would

The only thing better would have been to find the other two fried to a crisp still holding the ladder.

His family will probably sue because he was a good guy and trying to turn his life around. They'll claim negligence on the buildings owner for having copper close to live electricity. Just wait!

Bubba Says...

Look for the other scofflaws to be found out, and soon. Some years ago a trio of theives were stealing wire from an abandoned coal mine in IL. Similar outcome, one of them got electrocuted. In that case the genius friends then try to burn the body. (Think Viking funeral without the boat and water.) Failing that miserably, they cover him with brush and escape. The problem will probably be similar. The spousal unit of the deceased (Who knew who the hubby was with and what they were doing.) starts wondering where he is when he doesn't return with cash from the ill gotten gain. The two friends won't answer her calls. Then the body is discovered, and the wife rats out the other two in a skinny minute. That's my prediction for this unfortunate case. Ya heard it here first.

Wonder what led him to stealing Copper, which now is harder to resell than Grass.
