South Carolina town seeks 9 p.m. kid curfew

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. — The police chief in Hardeeville wants a stricter curfew for children under age 17.

'The Island Packet' of Hilton Head reports anyone 17 or younger must be inside by midnight unless they are with a parent or guardian, are working or attending an event.

But interim Police Chief Sam Woodward says children are out at night causing trouble and he wants the curfew moved up to 9 p.m. Woodward says a series of 15 car thefts in Beaufort and Jasper counties between March and June might have been prevented with a stricter curfew.

Any change would have to be approved by the town council.

Under the current law, curfew violators get a warning. For a second offense, their parents or guardians can be fined $200.
