Fourteen co-workers at the Kimberly-Clark plant in Beech Island are splitting a $1 million Powerball prize.

One of the winners, David Adams, of Warrenville, told South Carolina lottery officials he and the other winners formed the Process Specialist Retirement Fund a year and a half ago with the hopes of one day hitting it big. Each week, members contributed $5 for 35 chances at a Powerball jackpot.

They successfully matched four white ball numbers and the red Powerball last Wednesday after purchasing the winning ticket, a quick pick play, from 3 Way Food Mart 6 on Pine Log Road in Warrenville.

After taxes, each winner will take home about $48,500. The store also received a $10,000 commission.

“We took the ticket around to all the guys and we just kept checking the numbers over and over again,” Adams said in a news release. “We were taking pictures and high-fiving.”

Excitement spilled over to social media as one winner posted a picture of what a million-dollar win looks like.

At 48, Adams is the youngest of the winners, and the oldest is 63. Many of the winners have been working for 30 years or more and played hoping to win enough to retire, the release stated. For now, plans range from taking vacations to paying off homes and college tuition, but one winner said he’s buying a race car.

“It’s just us guys, and we’re a tight-knit group,” Adams said.

The group overcame odds of 1 in 5,153,633 to get the million-dollar win. They were one number short of collecting a multimillion-dollar jackpot.

The win isn’t enough to break apart the Process Specialist Retirement Fund in the future.

“I’m going Wednesday to buy our tickets,” Adams said.
