A woman was killed when she veered into oncoming traffic while eastbound on Washington Road near Mullins Crossing where she sideswiped a Lexus SUV and was hit broadside by a Ford truck. The truck driver escaped without injury and the driver of the Lexus was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Debra J. Garlington, 61, of Evans, was pronounced dead at the scene on Washington Road, Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins said.

Garlington’s Toyota sedan was in the inside eastbound lane west of Mullins Crossing shopping center about 2:15 p.m., when it crossed the center line, according to Columbia County sheriff’s Sgt. Mark Smith. The Toyota sideswiped a westbound Lexus SUV driven by Suphap Groombridge, 47, of Evans.

The Toyota then turned sideways in the westbound lane, where it was hit in the passenger door by a Ford Sport Trac, driven by Corey Michael Habegger, 44, of Evans, according to Smith. The truck pushed the sedan off the road.

Habegger and Groombridge sustained minor injuries.

i agree with corgimom

I agree with corgimom. Only one person knows for sure what started the chain of events. May God grant her soul eternal rest, and may He comfort her family.
