EFFINGHAM, S.C. — Authorities say a drunken driver has hit and killed a man mowing his lawn in Florence County.

Troopers said a pickup truck crossed the two-lane highway around 6:30 p.m. Thursday and hit the man outside his Effingham home.

The coroner’s office says 35-year-old Juan Ortuno died at the scene.

Authorities say the driver of the pickup, 28-year-old Christopher Powell of Florence, is charged with driving under the influence resulting in death and child endangerment because there was a child in his pickup truck at the time of the crash.

Powell remains in the Florence County jail.
