Citadel threatened over Confederate flag display

CHARLESTON, S.C. — A Charleston County councilman wants The Citadel to remove a Confederate flag from a campus chapel.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that councilman Henry Darby said he would ask county council to withhold nearly $1 million in funding to the school unless it removes the flag.

Darby said the Confederate flag in the Summerall Chapel makes it appear that the school is trying to preserve the Confederacy.

The Citadel says the flag is a “Confederate Naval Jack” that hangs in the rear of the chapel as a memorial. The school says the flag is covered by the state’s Heritage Act. The school says the Cadet Yacht Club presented the flag to Citadel President Charles P. Summerall in 1939.

A Citadel representative plans to attend the council meeting.

Stand your ground Citadel

It is time for the people who respect history to get a spine and quit kow-towing to people looking for an ax to grind.

Don't like the flag?

Then don't go in the chapel.
Quit trying to suppress others' expression. Speak out against them by all means if you disagree but lay off the censorship.

"I was not here during the Confederate Days"

Well, I was, and General Sherman told me personally that he had no problem with the flag.

So there!

The flag was presented in 1939. Where does some two-bit councilman get off wanting to rewrite history. Plus how does the county withhold funds from a state university.
I'll bet Darby is a bitter man and has a real chip in his shoulder. Please just go away.

I pretty much agree, although I see all this retro-slavery BS as more of a crutch to help prop up spread all the "white privilege" and "institutional racism" manure that is used by leftists to keep the races at each other's throats.

I have to admit that it still works, although not quite as well as it did a decade ago.

Glad to see that things are going so well in Charleston that this is all they have to worry about.

Darby, a councilman with an agenda to rewrite history ...

From USA Today, 11/20/2007: "... the city had promised $20,000 toward a Vesey memorial and provided a site in a municipal park. This summer, the Charleston County Council voted $40,000 for the memorial, and the city tentatively approved the design, which features a 7-foot statue of Vesey holding a Bible in one hand and carpentry tools in the other.

" ... Douglas Egerton, a historian at Le Moyne College in New York, who has written about the affair, says Vesey indeed was the plot mastermind." (of a plot to kill whites, including women and children, in 1822.)

See entire article: http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/2007-11-19-slave_N.htm?csp=1

I wonder if he ran on a platform of rewriting history? Lift up one part of history while tearing down another? Racism in reverse?

FLAG
Unpublished

I saw this flag in the chapel when I toured the Citadel. It's not flying on a flag pole out front so this councilman got his panties in a bunch over nothing. I bet if a black church had a Black Panther flag flying he wouldn't have any problem with it.

Gone With The Wind

“There was a land of Cavaliers and Cotton Fields called the Old South. Here in this pretty world, Gallantry took its last bow. Here was the last ever to be seen of Knights and their Ladies Fair, of Master and of Slave. Look for it only in books, for it is no more than a dream remembered, a Civilization gone with the wind...”

Isn't that called extortion?

Isn't that called extortion? It would be like the city telling Paine college if you don't enroll at least half of the student population is white or other ethnicities than black then we will cut off any funding of the school. Because a predominately black school hints at segregation. Dang. It's a memorial a vestige from the past but that if that is the game then we should force Paine college to oblige or close it's doors too. We have to be completely politically correct so no hint of racism or the old segregated south exists. So close all the historic black colleges and then we will talk about removing the old flags too.

Isn't the Citadel a State

Isn't the Citadel a State public school. How can the locale have that much influence? We sure had none with GRU and its naming. Sounds like this one councilman is a Fascist.

By constantly

harping on issues like this, black "leaders" can appear to be doing something. Things like this are easy to gripe about. It's the real problems in the black community that are hard to address. Guys like Darby find these problems too difficult to deal with.

It's perfectly acceptable to remember anything......except southern heritage!!

They simply want us to conform to being simple minded little minions, who don't ask questions and don't think for ourselves!! Just little to them!!

Well the SCOTUS ruled

Well the SCOTUS ruled affirmative action a racist vestige of the past so maybe we should eliminate that flag, close all the "black" colleges, disband the Congressional "Black" Caucus, Eliminate the KKK and the New Black Panthers, the list goes on. We have to have the "fairness doctrine" progressives believe in so much. No school can be predominately black so other races will have to be bused and distributed so there is a balance in all schools-I don't know how that will work in Richmond county so we got to actually attract other ethnicities to Augusta . Gosh this has far implications more than some old flag. Let's go.

Can't Deny History

There's no denying the role of The Citadel in the Civil War. Cadets fired the first shots of the war many believe when they unloaded cannons on The Star of the West attempting to resupply Fort Sumter. The Citadel today gives an award called The Star of the West.

Stupidity

This is basically some imbecile politician who probably can not come up with any solutions for 21st century problems trying to make a name for himself by dealing with 19th century problems. The flag has been in that chapel for nearly a hundred years and is part of a respectful memorial. No matter how much people try to erase history, the fact is the Confederacy was and is a part of the United States' own history. I guess if you try to erase everything you can pretend it never happened?
