Jay Carney quits White House post

WASHINGTON — White House press secretary Jay Carney became the news instead of just delivering it Friday, when President Barack Obama unexpectedly interrupted the daily media briefing to announce Carney’s resignation after three and a half years as his primary spokesman.

Obama said it was “bittersweet” to see his friend Carney step down and announced that principal deputy press secretary Josh Earnest will take over the job. Carney said the ultimate transition will take place around mid-June, but Earnest will take his place traveling next week on Obama’s trip to Europe.

Carney brought rare but practical experience to the job as a former reporter who once covered the White House for Time magazine. He left journalism to become communications director for Vice President Joe Biden and subsequently moved over to serve as Obama’s press secretary in 2011.

“He comes to this place with a reporter’s perspective,” Obama told reporters after interrupting Carney midsentence at the beginning of Carney’s daily news conference in the Brady Press Briefing Room. “That’s why, believe it or not, I think he will miss hanging out with you.”

A key component of a White House press secretary’s job is to regularly joust with reporters in an intense question-and-answer session. Obama said he is putting the “flak jacket” for dealing with the press on another friend in Earnest, who has worked with Obama since he was his communications director for the Iowa caucuses in the 2008 campaign.

The affable Earnest is well-liked within the White House press corps, and reporters applauded the announcement.

“As you know, his name describes his demeanor,” Obama said. “Josh is an earnest guy and you can’t find just a nicer individual even outside of Washington.”

Obama also teased Earnest for being the “golden voice and dulcet tones” that narrates West Wing Week, the weekly recap of White House events on YouTube. Earnest told reporters he’s “grateful and excited and relishes the opportunity to spend the next couple of years with you.”

It was Obama’s second appearance in the briefing room Friday to announce a resignation, the first being under much more somber circumstances as Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki left under pressure due to widespread problems plaguing the agency’s health care system. Obama said Carney’s job has put a strain on his family and the press secretary told him in April that he’s been wrestling with the decision whether to leave for some time.

The president said Carney plans to take the summer off before getting a new job. Carney said he’s made no decision yet on his next step, but is excited about some of the possibilities he’s begun to explore. He ruled out rumors that he would serve as ambassador to Russia, after having covered the collapse of the Soviet Empire for Time, saying his wife and two children wouldn’t welcome such a move.

Carney expressed his appreciation for working at the White House for five years, even though he says being press secretary is not easy.

“It’s an important interaction that takes place here,” Carney said. “It’s not always pretty. It could certainly be better. But to be a part of it is an honor and a joy for me. And no matter how tough the briefing is, I walk out of here having been glad to stand here.”

Obama said that Carney had demonstrated good judgment and temperament and said he will continue to rely on his advice from outside the West Wing. The two men embraced before Obama made his exit.

Good riddance the little

Good riddance the little liar. He was complicit in Obama's lies and knew they were lies. Perhaps one day we can prosecute these criminals and they can do the time they deserve for all their white collar crimes.

The need to constantly spin

The need to constantly spin situations has apparently burned Carney out. He hung in there, but it has got to burn one out to have to find a way to put a good face on the bungling of this administration.

That he is leaving without having something else lined up is telling.

I think the answer is B, t3.

I think the answer is B, t3. One can only go for so long having to lie and obfuscate for someone else. It has to take a toll.

They will just bring in

They will just bring in another minion, but at least it will be a new face!! I'm tired of seeing his disgusting, lying face!!

Yes, I suppose it does get tiresome having to think of new ways to spin and cover the lies of this administration!! He had no integrity to begin with, so he is certainly not trying to save any!! I don't believe there is a single person in this administration with integrity!! I actually use to try and respect the office of the President, but not any more!! I will never respect it with this president in office.

Well maybe he does have some

Well maybe he does have some integrity when he realizes everyone suspects his complicit in the lies-remember how Colin Powell is, to this day, angry over making a fool of himself bolstering Bush's WMDs. Colin was ticked, which indicates a honorable man. I hope that Jay has an ounce of integrity and he was sick of it too. You know it is difficult to stand up there and speak some of the ridiculous crap he was orchestrated to say. "Dang did I just say that" you know Jay isn't an idiot-like his boss. You could tell he wasn't sincere of late. I can't wait to read his memoirs. He should make a bundle if Obama doesn't edit it and allows him to print his real experience. I haven't read Gates book yet either-but it is on my list.

Doesn't say much

for Carney's character that he willingly stood there and lied for all that time.

Where's he going now, to head the VA?

stuaby is right on with their comment about t3bledsoe!! He often

made comments that were so liberal/democratic it would force me to give him the 'thumbs down. Bledsoe you are truly strong to go on this public forum and say that you had your 'head in the sand' and you probably were wrong. If other liberal/democrats would just wake up and see what their beliefs and their party have done wrong for so long our nation might make a turn to put us back on top.

Jay Carney probably had had enough and was just physically and emotionally tired for having to lie for Obama and his closest associates. He did a terrible job exceptionally well and I commend him for that. Often in news conferences his face showed a lot of stress and was even hard to look at at times. Thanks Jay, I hope you will find a job back in journalism that takes away the sting of working for Obama.

Will Carney talk?

Wonder if Jay Carney will do some interviews on TV, and TELL ALL? This would be a good way to restore his integrity. We know he knows a lot he could really say about this administration.

The people that work in the

The people that work in the White House work 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. It burns people out. They stick around long enough to make it look good on a resume, then they leave for better pastures and a more balanced life.

He will be able to write his own ticket for the rest of his life.

.
From my point if view, he took an honorable job and brought dishonor to it. The fact that he was willing to enthusiastically lie (not spin, they all do that), reflects poorly on him.

Maybe he can go to work for MSNBC or the New York Times. He should fit right in. He has the journalistic morality of Jason Blair.

BTW: Did anyone else make the comparison between

Jay Carney and Saddam Hussein's Iraqi Information Minister Muhammed Saeed al-Sahaf?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfAeMtcURg0

Both could deny something happening right in front them with a straight face.

- TREASURY OF QUOTES --
Information Minister Muhammed Saeed al-Sahaf IRAQ
"There are no American infidels in Baghdad. Never!"
"My feelings - as usual - we will slaughter them all"
"Our initial assessment is that they will all die"
"They're coming to surrender or be burned in their tanks."
"No I am not scared, and neither should you be!"
"Be assured. Baghdad is safe, protected"

Jay Carney Quote
“No matter how we reform health care, we will keep this promise to the American people: If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor. Period. If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. Period. No one will take it away. No matter what. My view is that health-care reform should be guided by a simple principle: Fix what’s broken and build on what works.”

Cabinet crumbling
Unpublished

Obama's cabinet is falling, tired of cover ups and lies. Christians will prevail over lies, perverts, and the administration backing of praising gays, same sex marriages, abortions, legalizing pot, placing gays above our vets, and still the so called black ministers are still supporting Obama, it has to be because he is black which is very racist to vote for skin color because it can't be for intelligence.

What's funny is if we had

What's funny is if we had another election right now-i bet the election would favor Obama. But not because he really won-but because he stole it again with his criminal activities using the IRS and other means for political advantage. He is from Chicago and the Al Capone ilk. Chicago is well known for being one the most politically corrupt city in the US. Breeding grounds for more Obama's.

Jay Carney...

...chose loyalty over integrity.

Both are commendable traits, but he had them in the wrong order.

Who will hire a man they know doesn't tell the truth? **

** Nevermind, plenty of jobs available in the mainstream media, the DNC, and for the next democrat Administration.
