ATLANTA -- The father of a DeKalb County man apprehended after Monday’s shooting at Paine College said his son has received threats on his life since January.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Anthony Cooper, father of Xavier Deanthony Cooper, said his son has remained in fear for his life since the semester began because of threats from Augusta youths who have developed a quarrel with a group of Atlanta area students.

“These boys were coming to their dorm rooms and saying they were going to kill him,” Anthony Cooper told the newspaper.

He said the group of men who threatened his son believed Xavier Cooper and his friends were moving in on their drug turf.

“He doesn’t sell drugs,” the father said.

Asked about the Monday shooting, the father said he didn’t know if his son was responsible, but acknowledged that he had been in fights with a certain group before and was trying to protect himself.

“I didn’t even know he had a gun or how he got it,” Anthony Cooper said. “All I know is that he had been protecting himself with a steel pipe.”

He said he and his wife have been in constant contact with Paine officials since their son began having fights at the school.

Why was the mother and father

Why was the mother and father in "constant communication" with Paine College when their son is a 20 year old GROWN MAN???

Why didn't Xavier go to the Augusta Police Department?

I've lived around drug dealers, and they don't pay any attention to people that don't use or sell drugs. So why did they think that he was invading their turf?

Why didn't he just pay attention to his studies, stay away from bad people, and stay out of trouble?

I think that, like most college students, what they do, and what the parents think they do, can be two very different things.

Well, their son is now facing very serious charges, I think his Paine College days are now over.

If my college son said that somebody was threatening their life, I'd say "Come home immediately, go somewhere else, there are colleges everywhere but you only have one life."

Paine College

Since this had been going on since January I do not understand why the parents and the young man did not make changes - such as leaving Paine and enrolling elsewhere.

@TW

Because that would hurt his street cred! You know, street cred with the drug dealers/gang bangers he was totally not involved with in any way....

Atlanta news stations are reporting that he had too issues with Dekalb county Public Safety, both serious charges in my opinion.

"Where is George Zimmerman when you need him?"

You give far too much credit to Zimmerman.

Had he not been viciously attacked by little Trayvon, no one would even know who he is.

After reading the headline I

After reading the headline I had some comments ready. Alas, you all have covered them all.

What parent stands by and watches when their child is defending themselves with a steel pipe at college????????? That really speaks volumes about the level of violence the black community is willing to accept, if this man is sincere in his comments.

I'm confused

A group of local youths were bothering him, but the student that was wounded was from NC.

As a parent, if that comment

As a parent, if that comment was all that I had to offer, I'd rather keep my mouth closed. It was nearly as insane as the incident and sheds much light on the darkness of their son's behavior and their apathy to his mindset.

Yes, as Corgi pointed out, Son! Come home!!

Yeah - Kinda like a poor man's Bill Clinton.

But NOTHING will ever alter the fact that Trayvon threw the first punch. Without that violence on Martin's part, both men would still be living their dull, uneventful lives.

An Now we have it the almost stereotypical statement

A few Check Blocks on the excuse list.

Not my Baby
or the less use
Not my son.

He was (or has) turned his life around.
used to explain arrests and felony criminal record .

He was defending himself after being threaten.

School Bully(s) made him do it.

He had a hard life growing up.

He was force into Crime by Gangs.

I don't expect to see the R-card as a reason.
Because this was a B.O.B. shooting. It could be he hid in fear of White LEO's, after he was attacked and defended himself.

Sorry to sound so cynical,
but we have heard the checklist a dozen times over the last year.

Surprise!, Surprise!, Surprise!

Another article reveals his 5 prior arrests. Sounds like the other students should have been fearing him instead of vice-versa...

The Fog Is Lifting....??

If this type of drug behavior is/has been going on @ Paine, then someone is clueless and has not been doing a very job of keeping Paine "clean". Mom and Dad have a son, who has past felony, but "chose" to check the "NO" block on his application to Paine. And apparently Mom and Dad decided to let son, handle the problem, since if Paine started nosing around, they might find the "NO" block had been checked in error. At this point in time, Paine needs to run background checks on all remaining students, at parent's expense. Scary thing is that they might be really surprised what comes back...

Doncha just love it when libs bring up Trayvon

and/or Zimmerman. They are so determined to rewrite the facts and history of that encounter, but will never get away with it.

Even the prosecution couldn't get around the fact that Martin initiated the violence. After that, nothing else much matters.

That's why the verdict read the way it did.

That's why, bullied or not, our shooter in this case is going to jail.
