Aiken AGY protest underway

AIKEN -- Workers at the AGY plant in Aiken continued to protest outside the facility Friday after union negotiations for a new labor agreement fell through.

The hourly employees, also members of Teamsters Local Union No. 509, say they are picketing for fair pay and to stay unionized. One worker said he was turned away by police Friday morning when he tried to enter the facility.

An Augusta Chronicle reporter was told by Aiken County sheriff’s deputies blocking the entrance that AGY representatives did not wish to speak to the media.

AGY produces glass fiber yarns and high-strength glass fiber reinforcements. The plant employs 600 salary and hourly workers at its Aiken facility on Wagener Road, according to picketers.
