Soon after Greeff shut off the heat Sunday afternoon, Guinness World Records handed him a certificate making his flame-broiled feat official. His barbecuing marathon had shattered the previous world record of 62 hours and six minutes.
“It was amazing,” said Phillip Robertson, a Guinness adjudicator who made sure Greeff’s record attempt was properly monitored and recorded. “He was like a machine. I don’t think he burned himself a single time.”
The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reported that Greeff cooked 1,000 hog dogs, 200 pieces of corn, 104 pieces of chicken, 558 hamburgers and 526 sausages during the more than three days he was grilling. It didn’t go to waste. Greeff handed out free food to bystanders, while much of it went to local charities that feed the needy.
From the moment Greeff started grilling under a white tent in Columbus last week, he had two witnesses watching him around the clock and recording everything in a log book. He was allowed five minute breaks every hour, and was allowed to save up some time for longer breaks.
A 29-year-old native of South Africa, Greeff said grilling plays a big part in people’s social lives in his home country. He moved to Columbus to attend college on a tennis scholarship at age 18 and now works for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia.
“When I came here, one of the very first things I did was get a grill,” Greeff said.
