The Augusta West Rotary Club on Thursday awarded its 2014 Louis Harris Award to Austin Rhodes, an afternoon radio talk-show host on WGAC.

The club has presented the award annually since 1979 to honor the memory of Harris, a community leader who was editor of The Augusta Chronicle and Augusta Herald in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s.

In accepting the award, Rhodes thanked WGAC management, his co-workers and many colleagues in attendance for their support over the past two decades.

“What talk radio does best is fill in the blanks,” Rhodes told the audience, and he said he appreciated the opportunity to do what he does in his hometown.

Austin tells it like it is and is the local antidote to PC MSM news. Congratulations on a well-deserved award, Austin!

Used to be

a great talk show but downhill since marriage and son came along. Not as well prepared. Too many references to family, too much expertise on teaching school, too many "oh by the ways," too many factual errors, long monologues and way too few callers. One deputy told me "Austin's not the go to guy that he used to be." Congratulations on the award though. You finally blew somebody away, just not with your gun.

Best in the CSRA

I am also sure we all disagree with him on occasions and quietly agree with him on others.

But, Truth be told, he is one of the 2 best that Augusta has has to offer, currently. Harley being the Morning drive in crowd show and Austin being drive home crowd

Austin could go national market, if his show was less local boy personal comparison format.

Who Was That?

Who was the person who worked for the Edgefield County online thing a few years ago? She did a lost and found, community events column. Didn't she win the award once?

@Noc :)

Noc, I bet you are thinking of Mary Dits. No, that's not her, but Mary does deserve the award.

I was joking about the Rape joke with Jill that caused a fire storm back in 2010.

Well I know you don't do it

Well I know you don't do it for awards or accolades, but it is nice to be recognized for your efforts. Awesome! I figured people would be trashing you over this-nice to see people being supportive-even if they disagree credit due is credit due. Well done.

The King of I
Unpublished

Congrats to the King of I ... I do this, I do that, I did this, I did that, I have this, I have that, I went here, I went there, I'd do it this way, I'd do it that way, I I I I, my car, my wife, my team, my shirt, my my my my etc etc etc. And as "brite idea" wrote at 10:33, far too many factual errors, monologues far too long (and repetitive ... get to the point!), expert on every subject known to man, I love the spouting of inaccurate legal advice. But that's why they call it the AR show, it's all about AR. In spite of all that, Louis Harris was a true gentleman and beloved in the community and its a wonderful award.

Congratulations

Austin does get some information to the listeners that doesn't get reported in other media outlets.

Congratulations Austin!!

…As a regular listener and a fellow conservative you deserve the honor!!.

But I wonder if you are fine with the "Insider" over at the "weakly tabloid of record" raking our very talented friend and fellow journalist pal Steven Uhles over the coals for a recent article he did on local music…

It seems to me that, that paper has more than enough deluded columnists who ramble and veer off into areas of thought that are ponderous to say the least..present company excluded of course!

To quote your oft used intro "In my humble opinion", the Insider is a weak and scurrilous device and Joe White should retire it and actually have the writer of the column ,whomever it is on any given issue, use their real name….

And before anyone says…"well you don't use YOUR real name Conservative Man"…True….

But I don't make a living with what I say here…..The "Insider" and Joe do!.

Good job!

Congratulations Austin!! You deserve this award. You and I agree on a lot of the same things. One of those things we agree on is that when writing or posting, it is vitally important to put ones name with one's comments. I have to agree with Conservative Man, whomever he/she is. What is your opinion on the,"Insider," of the Metro Spirit taking the comments of another fellow journalist; Steven Uhles, and totally destroying his article that was printed in the AC for sport? Why does the Spirit allow the Insider to remain anonymous? I would think after all of your Facebook posts about people not using their real names that you would not abide this. We both have the guts to always put our names out there. why not the Insider. Well done my friend.
