BLUE RIDGE, Ga. — A sheriff says a north Georgia judge was killed in a crash while riding a motorcycle.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Fannin County Chief Magistrate Judge Ronald Newton died Sunday afternoon in a wreck on Ga. 60 near the Georgia-Tennessee state line. Fannin County Sheriff Dane Kirby says Newton and his wife, Rita, were struck head-on by an oncoming car.

Authorities say Rita Newton was taken to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tenn. Her condition was not immediately available.

Kirby says the driver of the car involved in the crash was jailed with charges pending. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.
