The large cloud of smoke seen in McCormick and parts of Columbia County this afternoon is coming from a controlled burn of acreage.

Pam Tucker, director of Columbia County emergency services, says the burning of undergrowth is taking place on the South Carolina side of the Savannah River.

This burn is in the mountain bike trail area known as FATS (Forks Area Trail System). In the intersection of Woodlawn and Deep Step. The three trails where the burn is happening are Skinny, Brown Wave and Great Wall.
