CHARLESTON, S.C. — Authorities say one boater is dead and a second hospitalized after a weekend fishing trip in Charleston County.

The Coast Guard said the boaters were found on high ground near the Edisto River around 7 a.m. Monday after leaving on a fishing trip from Edisto Island on Saturday. The Coast Guard and other agencies began searching Sunday when the boat did not return.

The Coast Guard identified the missing as Michael Royston and 33-year-old Amy Claytor and initially reported Royston was fine and Claytor had been taken to the hospital. But the Charleston County Sheriff's Department later reported a male was dead at the scene and the coroner confirmed the victim was the 28-year-old Royston of Edisto Island.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Are these people required to pay for their rescue or does the taxpayer foot the bill?
