Ga. man killed during target practice

BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- A Glynn County man was killed Monday as he and a friend were target shooting north of Brunswick, police said.

Gary Drury, 65, of Brunswick, told police he and his friend William Joseph Crooms went to 44 Camp Road to target practice, Glynn County Police Capt. Marissa Tindale said in a release.

Drury said he began to shoot his Remington 270 rifle at a target on the property and was unaware that Crooms had walked into woods behind the target, Tindale said.

Unable to locate Crooms later, Drury said he began to search the property and found him in the woods some distance behind the target, Tindale said.

Glynn County police responded to the scene about 6 p.m., and the 66-year-old Crooms was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:09 p.m. of a single gunshot wound.

His body has been sent to a Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Savannah for an autopsy.

No charges have been filed.
