ATHENS, Ga. -- A University of Georgia student was hospitalized Monday after his scooter was struck by a car in west Athens.
Athens-Clarke County police said the student suffered “significant head injuries.”
Raphael Arbelaez apparently didn’t see the oncoming car. Police said his vision may have been blocked by a city transit bus that had stopped to discharge passengers.
The collision ocurred at Church and West Broad streets at about 4:30 p.m.
Arbelaez was driving his scooter north on Church Street and was attempting to cross West Broad Street, police said.
When struck by a Volkswagen Jetta traveling east on West Broad Street, the student was knocked off the scooter, struck the car’s windshield and landed in the roadway, according to police.
Arbelaez was taken by ambulance to Athens Regional Medical Center.
Any charges are pending completion of an investigation by the Athens-Clarke County police Traffic Unit.
