Driver found dead Saturday morning

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide after an Augusta man was found dead in his truck early Saturday.

About 5:40 a.m., a Richmond County sheriff’s deputy was traveling down Bobby Jones Expressway near the Mike Padgett Highway exit ramp, spotting a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado that appeared to be disabled, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. As the deputy approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, the deputy discovered the driver with a gunshot wound.

The driver, Gerald Clifford, 28, suffered one gunshot wound, Richmond County Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose said. He was pronounced dead at the scene about 6:18 a.m. An autopsy is scheduled to take place Saturday in Atlanta.

Violent crimes investigators are currently working the case, according to the statement. Further details will be forthcoming.
