GREENVILLE, S.C. -- An 11-year-old boy has survived a fall into a well in Greenville County.

Sheriff’s Lt. Tim Ridgeway says the boy was in the well for more than an hour before he was pulled out at around 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Ridgeway says the well is at least 150-feet deep and is under a porch behind a vacant house.

Ridgeway says the boy was in water up to his shoulders and may have a broken arm. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for hypothermia.

Authorities say they do not plan to file any charges against the boy and another child who had been playing with him.

Why don't they file charges against the property owner unless he fills in the well?

The well was covered with wooden planks, but the wood broke as the boys were playing and running across the wood. I read this off an Upstate news source. One of the two boys fell in and the other went to get help.

The buddy system

worked 100% in this case. Picture the boy being by himself - unthinkable.
Hope that he is not in too bad a condition and will be able to go home soon.
Rotten wood over a well is no excuse for a "cover".
