SAVANNAH, Ga. — Jurors have convicted a Savannah man of murder in the slaying of a teenager whose body was found in the trunk of a burned car.

Thirty-seven-year-old Shan Demetrius Cheley faces a maximum sentence of life without parole in the death of 18-year-old Amber DeLoach.

DeLoach’s remains were found in the trunk of her burned rental car on Sept. 30, 2012.

Authorities say the teen was last seen alive walking toward the car in Savannah’s City Market area early that morning.

Prosecutors contend Cheley met DeLoach before taking her to his home, where she was sexually assaulted and strangled before being placed in the car trunk.

Cheley claimed the sex was consensual, and jurors acquitted him on a rape charge linked to the killing.

Sentencing will be held later.
