MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — There does not seem to be an easy answer to the problem of coyotes on the Grand Strand.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported a number of residents in the Surfside Beach area have reported the deaths of cats and dogs because of coyotes in the area.

Surfside Beach Town Council has authorized the hiring of trappers to get rid of the animals.

Jay Butfiloski with the Natural Resources Department says the natural areas, green spaces and golf courses common along the Grand Strand have the potential to have the kind of prey that coyotes prefer.

Coyotes were first documented in South Carolina in the Upstate in 1978. Since then, they’ve spread to all 46 counties.

Butfiloski says coyotes tend to avoid humans as they seek small animals.

Why would you trap them??

They are nowhere near extinct and where would you put them? They are a problem EVERYWHERE. I'm with JRC and I know a group of about 8 men who would gladly come solve the problem for the cost of a few hotel rooms and a case of beer.
