CHARLESTON, S.C. — Authorities say a woman and child were found dead in separate beds inside a Summerville home.

Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury says a social worker from Sangaree Intermediate School went to the home Tuesday morning after the girl had missed two days of school. When no one answered the door, she called the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

Salisbury says the deaths are being investigated as murders. He declined to say how they died or when.

He says he won’t release names until after an autopsy, which is scheduled for Wednesday.

Neighbors say the woman and girl had lived in the home for about a year.
