Dogwood Stable’s Palace Malice is gearing up for his next big race, the $600,000 Grade I Jim Dandy Stakes on July 27.

Following his win in the Belmont Stakes, the colt has now moved from Belmont Park to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Dogwood president Cot Campbell said.

“He worked a half mile by himself on Sunday, going in a spritely 49:2, and looked good doing it,” Campbell said in a news release. “Actually, (trainer) Todd Pletcher put him back in work shortly after the Belmont, or he was going to tear the barn down.

“The big objective is the Midsummer Derby – the $1 million Grade I Travers Stakes – on Aug. 24. It is a mile and a quarter, and the Jim Dandy is a mile and an eighth.”

Campbell said he is pointing the horse toward a fall race at Belmont and then the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita on Nov. 2 if all goes well.

The Aiken-based stable plans to campaign Palace Malice as a 4-year-old in 2014. Following the Breeders’ Cup, Palace Malice would come back to Aiken for a six- to eight-week break.
